Moving photos from your phone to your computer

The real issue is not the copying but the checking : never delete the originals before you have opened the copied files.

Photos are, along with administrative paperwork, what people most regret losing. A transfer done properly takes half an hour ; a transfer that was never checked sometimes ends in years of pictures gone.

By cable, the safest method

It depends on no account, no subscription and no connection.

  1. Connect the phone to the computer with a data cable - many cables only charge, and that is the most frequent cause of failure.
  2. Unlock the phone. On Android, a notification offers the connection mode : choose File transfer. On iPhone, accept the "Trust this computer" prompt.
  3. The phone then appears in File Explorer. The photos are in the DCIM folder.
  4. Copy the whole folder to your computer, then open a few images at random, including the oldest ones.

Windows also offers an automatic import through the Photos app, which sorts by date. Convenient, but I prefer copying the DCIM folder by hand : you see exactly what goes across.

The cloud trap

Many people believe their photos are backed up because they are in Google Photos or iCloud. That is syncing, not backup : if you delete a photo on the phone, it disappears from the cloud too. And if the account becomes inaccessible, everything becomes inaccessible at once. A copy on your own computer, independent of the account, is still essential.

Without a cable

  • From the service's website: Google Photos and iCloud let you download the whole library from a browser, in one or several archives. It is slow but complete, and it works even if the phone is broken.
  • Through a local transfer app, which sends the files from one device to the other over the home Wi-Fi.
  • Through the memory card, on Android phones that have one, by reading it directly on the computer.

What people often forget

Photos received through messaging apps are not in the DCIM folder but in a folder belonging to that app. Videos, being larger, are sometimes stored elsewhere. And on iPhone, a storage optimisation setting keeps only lightweight versions on the device : in that case a cable transfer does not retrieve the full-resolution originals, which are in iCloud. It is a classic disappointment.

Before deleting anything

Check three things : the number of files copied matches, the oldest photos open properly, and the videos play. Then wait a few days before freeing up space on the phone. A copy that has not been checked is not a copy.

Ideally make two : one on the computer, one on an external drive. See how to back up your data.

Getting help with it

We handle the whole transfer, the sorting and the setting up of a lasting backup, at your home across Lyon and the Rhone, or remotely for the computer side.

Frequently asked questions

My phone does not appear in File Explorer, why ?

Two causes dominate : a charging cable with no data wires, or the connection mode left on "Charging only". Unlock the phone and select file transfer.

Is Google Photos enough as a backup ?

No. It is syncing : a deletion on the phone propagates, and losing the account means losing access. An independent local copy is still needed.

Can photos be recovered from a broken phone ?

Often yes, especially if they were synced with an account, or if only the screen is damaged. Much depends on the state of the device.
