Business network and Wi-Fi

When it falters, on the other hand, everything stops at once: shared files, email, business software, sometimes the phones. It is the one component whose failure affects everyone at the same time.

Cable before Wi-Fi

That is our first piece of advice, and it often runs against expectations. A desktop machine, a printer or a server is better cabled: it is faster, more stable, and it frees up wireless bandwidth for those who genuinely need it.

Wi-Fi is still essential for laptops, phones and visitors. But a network where everything goes over the air saturates quickly, and diagnosis becomes difficult.

What we put in place

The cabling and the cabinet, with labeled sockets and a diagram: without that, every future visit starts with half an hour of hunting.

When the network drags

Before buying anything, we measure. The bottleneck is almost never where people think: often an old cable, a limited port, a router doing everything at once, or a single machine saturating the line on its own. See network optimization.

Wi-Fi for your customers

In a shop, a restaurant or a waiting room, it is an expected service. It can be set up properly: a network separate from yours, its own password, limited throughput so it does not slow your own work, and optionally a landing page in your name.

Two points often overlooked: that network must not see any of your machines, and the traffic on it must not saturate your line at peak times.

What brings a business network down

Rarely the hardware, usually the accumulation. A router supplied by the operator acting as router, firewall, Wi-Fi and phone system all at once, buckling under the load. Cables added over the years with no labelling. A network switch dropped under a desk as a stopgap, and still there five years later.

So diagnosis starts with the real topology, not the theory: what is plugged in where, what passes through what. That is often where the answer lies, before any purchase.
