A broken screen affects neither your data nor the rest of the machine. It is a part, and it can be replaced.
That is the first thing to know, because many people replace a perfectly healthy machine for this reason alone. Replacing a panel is a routine job, and usually far cheaper than a new computer.
Plug an external monitor or a television into the laptop's video output. If the picture appears correctly there, the graphics chip and the motherboard are fine : only the screen assembly is at fault. If the external screen stays black too, the problem is elsewhere and replacing the panel would achieve nothing.
A second useful test for a very dark screen : shine a lamp across the panel at an angle. If you can make out the image, the display works and it is the backlight that has died.
Three factors, in order of weight : the resolution and quality of the panel - a high-resolution or OLED panel costs considerably more than a standard one ; whether it is a touchscreen ; and how it is fixed, since some very thin models have the panel glued to the chassis, which lengthens the job.

Do not press on the damaged area to "see how far it goes" : the ink blotches spread with every press. Avoid closing the lid sharply, and remove any glass fragments carefully. If the screen is cracked enough to let debris into the keyboard, better to switch it off.
