A slow computer is not a finished computer. Here are the criteria we apply to decide between repairing and replacing.
The question comes up on every job, and the answer is never a matter of age. A well-built seven-year-old machine will serve you better than a three-year-old entry-level model. What counts is a handful of specific criteria.
For everyday use - office work, internet, photos, video calls - reckon on seven to ten years for a desktop and five to eight for a laptop, which is more exposed to knocks, heat and battery wear. Those figures assume one or two services along the way : a move to an SSD, more memory, dust removal, a new battery.
Support for Windows 10 ended in October 2025. A machine left on that system no longer receives security fixes, which makes it steadily more vulnerable whatever antivirus is installed.
Two situations. If the hardware is compatible with Windows 11, the upgrade happens without replacing the machine - often the case for computers made after 2018. If the processor is not on the supported list, replacement genuinely comes into question, or a move to an alternative system such as Linux for simple use, which extends the life of an older machine very effectively.
A simple rule, applied in many workshops : if the cost of the repair goes past a third of the price of an equivalent new machine, and the computer is already several years old, replacing becomes the more sensible course. Below that, repair is almost always the better calculation - financially and environmentally.
If replacement is unavoidable, new is not the only option. A professional refurbished machine, tested and guaranteed, is often better built than an entry-level new model at the same price. We offer new, used and refurbished hardware, with installation and data transfer.
Do not put it out with the rubbish. A computer holds recyclable parts and personal data that has to be erased properly - a simple format is not always enough. We take care of secure erasure and recycling of the equipment being replaced.
A diagnosis will tell you what your machine is really worth and what an upgrade would bring. We have no interest in selling you a computer you do not need : a repaired machine that lasts three more years makes for a satisfied customer.
Not necessarily. If the case and the screen are in good condition and the memory can be extended, an SSD and a general service often give it several more years for a modest outlay.
Documents, photos, email and bookmarks transfer across in full. Software has to be reinstalled, but the licences can usually be reused.
A professionally refurbished machine is tested, cleaned, fitted with new parts where needed and sold with a warranty. It is generally business hardware, sturdier than the consumer entry level.
